6 Things You Didn't Know About Dating Apps and Privacy Settings

Featured Image

To help you know what privacy features to use on dating apps, we asked information security experts this question for their best advice. From making sure your photos don’t reveal personal data to turning off live location, there are several insights that may help you protect your privacy on dating apps.

What is one privacy feature you should use on dating apps?

Here are six ways to ensure your privacy on dating apps:

  • Make Sure Your Photos Don’t Reveal Personal Data
  • Limit Who Sees Your Profile On Tinder Plus
  • Keep Photo Verification on
  • Don't Share Your Full Name
  • Avoid Using Facebook To Register
  • Turn Off Live Location

Make Sure Your Photos Don’t Reveal Personal Data

Often overlooked, photos can be a feature of dating apps that reveal more about you than you realize. Ensure that you do not post photos that include details that might identify you through the internet. With identity theft on the rise, it is more important than ever to protect yourself from cybercriminals.

Limit Who Sees Your Profile On Tinder Plus

You will want to avoid the undesirables on Tinder, which otherwise is a suitable app for those looking to meet someone. Pay the extra fee per month (which comes out to about $8) to get the feature that limits who can see your profile. It gives you the ability to keep your profile hidden unless you make the first move (i.e., swipe right). If you swipe left on someone’s profile, that person will never have access to your profile. That’s the safe way to approach Tinder.

Keep Photo Verification on

One privacy feature that should always be on when using dating apps is photo verification. Dating apps use photo verification to make sure profiles are legitimate. If someone does not have the icon indicating they are photo-verified, there is a good chance the profile could be fake. Verifying your own photos ensures people will actually respond to you too.

Don't Share Your Full Name

Never give your full name unless a dating site requires it for identity verification. Having someone’s first and last name is the first key to accessing so much information about a person, so there is little use in sharing your full name unless it’s a prerequisite for registration. Though we should approach socializing and dating with an open mind and heart, ready to trust and love, keeping a reasonable handle on sensitive information is always a reasonable policy for navigating the internet.

Avoid Using Facebook To Register

Most apps prefer a user to link through their Facebook account, but it is safer to use a phone number on dating sites, this way the app cannot share your likes and friends with other users. It gives a user more control over their profile.

Turn Off Live Location

Your live location feature puts you at risk as it may give clues to exes and other stalkers that may be stalking you and looking to find out where you are. The best advice is to only turn ON this feature when sharing your location with a trusted match you meet, rather than leaving it for everyone to see.
